Mercy Health St. Charles Hospital

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Clinical Coordinator for in-patient nursing renders professional nursing care to patients in collaboration with the patient’s medical care plan and by the policies and procedures set forth by Mercy St Anne/St Charles Hospital. Coordinates the daily activities of the in-patient units in collaboration with the physicians, nursing, case management, and support staff. Understands and effectively reacts to the unique needs of the neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and/or geriatric patient. Supports the Mission and Core Values of the Sponsors. Respects and maintains confidentiality.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Minimum Education – Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Must hold a current license to practice in Ohio. BCLS and ACLS are required. BSN preferred. PALS certification preferred.

Minimum Experience – 3 years experience as an RN. Prior supervisory experience in in-patient nursing is preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Knowledge – Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to provide and evaluate patient care. Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care and common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.

Skills and Abilities – Ability to identify problems and recommend solutions; react calmly and effectively in critical situations; interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures; communicate effectively both in writing and verbally, and strong customer service skills.

Physical Demands – Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing an average of twenty-five to fifty pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal ranges.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities :

Assesses the patient’s condition and nursing needs. Sets goals, and prescribes appropriate nursing actions to meet those goals and the physical, psychosocial, cultural, spiritual, and rehabilitation needs of the patient.

  1. Able to provide direct patient care as needed and able to direct care.

  2. Communicates accurate information about the patient to the team members, case managers, physicians, other nursing units, shift managers, and ancillary departments.

  3. Applies basic verbal and non-verbal communication skills to identify and reduce anxiety in the patient and family.

  4. Plans with the manager of In-Patient Nursing or the Shift Manager, the daily assignment of personnel so that all nursing duties are effectively staffed. Enforces low census, tardiness, and absenteeism policies. Utilizes flexible hours. Assists Manager of In-Patient Nursing to operate within defined productivity levels.

  5. Maintains quality of patient care in compliance with hospital policies, regulatory agencies, National Patient Safety Standards, and physician orders.

  6. Coordinates the use of supplies and equipment for in-patient floors. Coordinates the borrowing/lending of equipment and supplies with other areas of the hospital.

  7. Prepares for potential emergencies. Helps to ensure quality checks are completed for crash carts and waive testing.

  8. Assesses competencies of team members and has input in performance evaluations of RNs, LPNs, Nurse Aides, and unit secretaries. Assists with any competency fairs.

  9. Applies administrative principles and management techniques in assessing, planning, leading, evaluating, delegating, and educating. Assists with planning unit teaching program and utilizes all opportunities to enrich the experience of staff.

  10. Analyzes the needs of the department and informs the Manager of In-Patient Nursing of the same through the budgeting process.

  11. Assists in the interview process of new employees. Coordinates the peer interview process. Coordinates the orientation of new personnel including accessing needs for computer training, phlebotomy, and EKG training, and selects and assists preceptors with the new staff member.
