The Office of Judicial Administration is responsible for the efficient administration of all agencies that operate under the direction of the Chief Justice and the Supreme Court. OJA includes over 200 personnel who are responsible for fiscal management, communication, technology, legal services, intergovernmental relations, services for the trial court, and support for court boards, commissions, and committees. The Office is headed by Chief Administrative Officer Justin P. Forkner, who reports directly to the Chief Justice of Indiana and serves as the link between the Chief Justice and the agencies of the Court.

Salary: The salary for this position traditionally starts at $50,000 but may be commensurate with education and/or experience.

About the Job:

The Indiana Supreme Court’s Office of Communication, Education, and Outreach has an opening for a Communication Specialist. The position includes communication functions related to ADA compliant content creation for internal and external messaging. The role has primary responsibility for the Court’s social media channels and supports outreach through the court website, the library, judicial nominating commissions, and webcasting of oral arguments. This is an in-person job at the state capitol building and downtown administrative office; it is not remote.

A Day in the Life:

The Specialist with the Office of Communication, Education, and Outreach has responsibilities to the Office as a whole, with specific duties related to the court’s social media channels, its website, the webcasting of oral arguments, and outreach through the law library and judicial nominating commissions. It is critical for the person to have an interest in creating ADA compliant materials for distribution as well as the ability to train and guide staff on ADA compliance in outreach materials. It is essential to be at the worksite during regular business hours, including the ability and desire to spend time at two workspaces in separate downtown locations (the State House and the Court administrative office). The Specialist must be eager to interact with judicial branch staff, including judges, attorneys, IT professionals, and others who support the work of the courts. The position requires attention to detail, juggling many projects, and working well in a small and collaborative team environment to facilitate outreach to the public and press.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with maintaining an accurate presence on social media including tracking details of the Court’s social media accounts and appropriately managing outreach through the channels

  • Write for the courts.in.gov website; including ensuring accurate, ADA-compliant information is posted online for public availability

  • Assist library patrons (the public, lawyers, and judges) with directional and ready reference requests in a professional and friendly manner without providing legal advice

  • Provide support to the needs of the state’s four county judicial nominating commissions including posting application materials online and meeting support

  • Maintain records, invoices, shipping lists, and receipts in spreadsheets, databases, and online catalog systems

  • Assist with written and visual communication explaining how courts operate

  • Answer calls and respond to correspondence as appropriate

  • Assist with court events and functions, including oral argument webcasting and setup of media mult-box equipment and courtroom sound equipment

What You'll Need for Success:

Bachelor's degree (preferred) in communication, business, psychology, criminal justice, or related, and two (2) years' work experience. Applicants must submit a resume, cover letter, and two references. Applicants that do not submit a cover letter will not be considered.

Physical Effort:

Depending on the duties performed or environment setting, frequent walking, standing, climbing stairs or ladders, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling and/or similar movements may be involved.
