Powell Industries, Inc. Senior R&D Laboratory Assistant in Houston, Texas

Purpose of Position

The Senior Research and Development Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing prototype assembly and testing. This includes, but is not limited to, electrical, mechanical, and electromechanical assembly and testing. The candidate must be able to work either individually or as part of a small team while assisting in design and development tasks. They will be expected to provide input from assembly tasks and tests that have been conducted. Candidate will also be responsible for helping maintain cleanliness of work areas. Posted position does not allow for sponsorship or relocation assistance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assembly of prototypes with and without instruction(s) from R&D Engineering staff.

  • Conduct prototype testing in accordance with given test plans.

  • Generate thorough and concise test result documentation.

  • Test equipment calibration, storage, set-up, operation and repair.

  • Assist in analyzing test failures and helping to propose corrective actions.

  • Help conduct experiments to prove relevant design theories.

  • Design and Construction of new test apparatus.

  • Maintenance of written test and equipment procedures for use by R&D personnel.

  • Provide basic trouble shooting and repair of electrical and mechanical equipment.

  • Maintain laboratory in a clean and orderly fashion.

  • Expedite R&D project materials from inside and outside sources.

Skills and Requirements

  • 3-5+ years of experience in Engineering Laboratory or Manufacturing.

  • Preferred A.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technologies or equivalent

  • Must be highly motivated and a self-starter with excellent time management skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions with an attention to detail.

  • Organizational skills are required to track and expedite R&D materials.

  • Excellent electrical, mechanical and problem-solving skills.

  • Thorough knowledge in reading and interpreting part and assembly drawings.

  • Certified forklift and crane operator a plus.

  • Knowledge of electrical symbols, characters and drawings.

  • Knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards.

  • Computer skills using Oracle, Word, Excel.

  • Ability to attend in house and outside training sessions.

  • Ability to follow policies and procedures, work instruction, ISO policies, safety rules and regulations.
