Job Information

The Principal Engineer is responsible for the direction, execution, control and completion of an electrolyzer product development project. A deep technical knowledge of electrochemical stack design and technology, along with electromechanical component selection and integration are critical to ensure product design is aligned with the technical requirements set at the component and system assembly level. The Principal Engineer will lead a complex, cross departmental project in the field of hydrogen generating electrolyzer product development, including both the cell stack assembly and the balance of plant. Technical leadership and support for overall systems design, development and integration of mechanical, structural and thermal systems is critical. A detailed knowledge of PEM electrolysis and fuel cell stack key to quality features, impacts on performance and durability, as well as manufacturability, will be critical to success. The Principal Engineer will serve as the primary person responsible for aligning project schedules and resources with overall program timeline and budgets and ensuring execution meets technical product and business case requirements. The Principal Engineer will utilize a wide spectrum of business and technical knowledge and skills to assess risks and assure the project is addressing critical aspects that may impact the project.

Role & Responsibility

  • Requires effective collaboration with multi-functional groups, both internal and external. Primary point to focus the project team on identifying and meeting internal and external customer requirements and expectations.

  • Develop and maintain a project schedule that supports the overall program milestones and objectives.

  • Collaborate amongst various engineering functional groups to coordinate design activities and ensure thorough, accurate documentation of component designs and subassemblies.

  • Utilize the Technology Readiness Level development process to ensure new product development programs meet all technical requirements.

  • Collaborate with Manufacturing to coordinate implementation of new designs – ensure timely and accurate handoff of key processing parameters and critical to quality metrics in stack and BOP assembly.

  • Coordinate with engineering, manufacturing, test and facilities group for cell stack assembly production line and test stand design, procurement, installation and commissioning

  • Ensure the designs have been validated and thoroughly documented prior to production release.

  • Work with suppliers and fabricators to support generation of low cost, durable designs.

  • Guide engineering and operations teams through supplier identification, development, first unit builds and transition to production.

  • Ensure certification and safety product design requirements are met, considering variations for a global sales strategy.

  • Utilize root cause techniques to determine true root cause, and implement mitigation/corrective actions going forward.

  • Create an environment where the team is involved, included, motivated, and valued, with a solid sense of project scope ownership.

Education

  • BA/BS with 10+ years of experience.

  • MA/MS with 7+ years of experience.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Advanced knowledge of fuel cells/fuel cell process technologies.

  • Pipe/Tube Welded Assemblies experience.

  • Experience with ASME B31 Pressure Piping, Pressure Vessels, Structural Weldments.

  • Design experience of Process Piping (PPLTS, Ships, Boilers, Industrial Design, Generator, Electrolyzer, Water Treatment, Oil and Gas).

  • Experience with large Electromechanical systems.

  • Experience with clearly understanding/properly executing customer demands/requirements.

  • Cell stack test stand design, fabrication and operation experience.

  • PEM electrolysis and fuel cell stack component design and assembly experience.

  • Advanced time management and analytical skills.

  • Problem and conflict resolution skills.

  • Proven leadership and delegation skills .

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.

  • Familiarity with Project Management tools and skills.

  • Experience with process improvement techniques.

  • Budgeting development and control experience.

  • Broad industrial experience through varied manufacturing and engineering assignments and exposures.
